California’s newest celebrity

California’s newest celebrity

When I came to California’s Humboldt County in mid-December, I had ideas of photographing the ocean, the redwoods, and possibly some wildlife. Little did I know, a star was about to be born.

After making a few trips to the Avenue of the Giants, and a few trips to various beaches, I began to get the urge to shoot some wildlife. I already knew of a few places to go after having stayed in the area for a month last year at this time. I’m always looking for new places to explore, so I searched the internet looking for wildlife locations in Humboldt County. I noticed the results were dominated by a Great Gray Owl (Strix Nebulosa). Further reading revealed that this owl was outside it’s normal range, which is usually higher elevations and farther north. In fact, the last time the species was recorded here was 1982! Quite interesting, I thought, and worth a 60 or so mile drive from where I’m staying to try for a sighting.

Great Grey Owl Visits the Redwoods

For a little while in the winter of 2016, this great grey owl (Strix nebulosa) strayed from its traditional range to vacation in the towering coastal redwoods of Humboldt County, California.

On my first trip, I went to the visitor center to inquire about owl sightings and was told that it had been seen nearly every day since it was first spotted on January 16th. Alas, I picked a day when the bird decided to remain in hiding and went home with no sighting and no photos.

The next trip, however, proved to be successful, and a bit startling. Unaware of how popular and sought-after this bird is, I was somewhat surprised by the number of birders and photographers present. At any given time, at least 20-30 people are watching and photographing this owl, who seems pretty uninterested in it’s hoard of admirers.

Great Grey Owl in Flight

On that first trip, I only came away with one flight shot, but many portraits of the owl perched in redwood trees. Given that this species is not usually found in this area, and that coastal redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) have a very limited distribution, these photos are pretty unique and I’m thrilled to have captured them.

Great Grey Owl in a Giant Redwood

The great grey owl (Strix nebulosa) is an uncommon visitor to California’s coastal redwood forests. This one visited Humboldt County in 2016 at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.

Both times I was fortunate to photograph this owl, I was in the company of many other photographers. Most of the people I spoke to had driven six or more hours just to see and photograph this bird. It seems I was in the presence of the most famous owl in California!

On my third visit, Mr. Famous Owl was in a different part of the forest, surrounded by smaller and less impressive trees. But, that was the visit where I captured the best flight shot.

Great Gray Owl Swoop

Being there and being surrounded by so many photographers, with so many expensive lenses and other gear was a bit humbling. Many times when I am photographing wildlife, I’m among people who have just happened along and my camera and lens is something impressive compared to their phones and pocket cameras. In this case, I was definitely the one with lesser gear. These owl paparazzi are quite serious about their camera equipment, and quite willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars on it.

Great Gray Owl Pose

But, as they say, it’s not the camera, but the person behind it. In my case, I do the very best I can with what I have. And while I may have had a little bit of “gear envy,” especially when the light started to fade and my lens could no longer cut it, I still came away from this experience with great satisfaction and gratitude. I mean, how often do you get the opportunity to see and photograph such a magnificent bird in such a magnificent setting? No wonder he’s famous!

What a year it’s been!

What a year it’s been!

The one year anniversary of my vagabond life was September 17th. I spent it photographing wildlife in the rain in Grand Teton National Park. It’s hard to believe it’s already been a year since that bittersweet day I left most of my possessions behind and began an unforgettable journey into the unknown.

I’ve learned that traveling is much different when it’s your life. I go slower, see more, and change my plans often. I’ve discovered the true meaning of “it’s not the destination, but the journey.” I’ve stressed over repairs and thanked my lucky stars that this old motor home is still holding up. I’ve been back to familiar places and discovered some I never knew existed.

Boxelder Canyon is a little-known, beautifully scenic gorge in Converse County Wyoming, near the town of Glenrock. The interior of the canyon is virtually inaccessible to all but the most determined of hikers. There are no trails and many sheer rock walls, which is perhaps why it is still as enchanting and unspoiled as it was when I lived in this area more than three decades ago.

My home has been at sea level and at over 8000 feet. I’ve met others who, like me, choose to live this way and others who live this way not of their own choice. I’ve met people who wish to live this life “someday,” and some who have been doing it for decades. And despite the impressions some people seem to have, my life is not just one big vacation. There is still laundry, grocery shopping, house cleaning and dirty dishes. A lot of time is spent on RV maintenance as well. I’ve found that no matter what I expect, life still gives me the unexpected. I’ve gotten comfortable with not knowing what’s next. Some of the places I thought would be amazing turned out to only be okay. Some of the places I thought would be okay turned out to be amazing.

Bird Fest 2015

Bird Fest 2015

I’m always amazed at how the universe conspires to put me right where I should be, right when I should be there. I’m slowly making my way to the desert southwest to visit and revisit some places I really want to photograph. However, I don’t want to show up while it’s still winter, and I don’t like to drive long distances without some “stay put” time, so my journey is slow-paced. This is not a problem for me, and it’s actually perfect in many ways. So, what to see and photograph while passing through central California? Well, wildlife, of course! Not only is central California one of the most productive agricultural regions in the country, it’s also home to an amazing variety of birds and other wildlife.

It seems the first three months of my travels were dedicated to getting better at landscape photography, and the last two months have been an opportunity to hone my wildlife photography skills. I didn’t intentionally set out to balance things so well, it seemed to just work out that way.

When I got here, I planned to stay only a week or two. Long enough to take care of some business and maybe visit a couple of wildlife refuges. The rent per week here adds up to more for a two week stay than the rent per month. So, being thrifty (i.e. cheap), I opted for a month, thinking I could leave after two weeks and still get the cheaper rate. Now, I don’t want to leave so soon! So, it all just fell into place beautifully and I have two extra weeks to enjoy Bird Fest 2015, my own little celebration of the birds of California.

I must be crazy!

I must be crazy!

I’ve been selling prints of my photos for over three years now. It’s no secret to me what people buy. Dramatic landscapes and beautiful flowers sell more than anything else I shoot. Yet I feel compelled to shoot wildlife. Luckily, I have enough of a retirement to provide for my basic needs. And it’s a good thing too, because otherwise I would starve. I’ve just bought a new zoom lens and refurbished camera in order to get better wildlife shots. Am I nuts?

When I go out to a wildlife area, and come back with something like this, I feel like I’ve won the lottery! All the excitement, without the money! It’s just so challenging and fun, I can’t seem to help myself.

Don’t misunderstand, I still want to shoot landscapes, but the wildlife is definitely calling me. So, on the way to my next landscape destination, I find myself planning to pass by as many National Wildlife Refuges as possible. I want to revisit Zion National Park, where I visited in 2011.

So, I’m switching it up. Instead of staying in the same place for two weeks or a month at a time, I will be heading to the desert and only staying for a few days at each stop. I hope to be in the southwest as spring arrives. But I also hope to see some interesting wildlife along the way.

So, friends and fans, stick with me and continue to travel along vicariously, even if I’m crazy. I’ll be following my bliss and we might just see some interesting creatures along the way. At least, that’s what I’m hoping. Then again, maybe I’m just crazy.

Movin’ on

Movin’ on

With less than a week to go in Waldport, Oregon, I can’t help but look back fondly on my stay here. While I can’t really say I’ve stayed anywhere so far that wasn’t good, this place has been the best. If you ever need a place to camp on the central Oregon coast, I highly recommend a stay at Chinook RV Park. Not only is it a great campground with level sites, clean restrooms, and a great doggie play area, but it’s a natural wonder as well. Right on the Alsea River, just a few miles from downtown Waldport, there is more wildlife to be seen here than at some National Wildlife Refuges I’ve been.

The surrounding area is dense with legendary scenery, which is why I picked this location to begin with. There is much, much more here than can been seen even in a month, and I’ve discovered some scenic surprises while I’ve been here.

Of course, I’ve also photographed some familiar locations. All, while working in or around the rain, which is pretty much the norm here this time of year. Over the years I’ve found that rain can make for some unexpectedly wonderful photo ops.

But the most pleasant surprise at this particular location has been the multitude of creatures. Like this harbor seal I spied swimming in the Devil’s Churn at high tide. At first I thought the poor thing must have gotten lost or been washed into the crevice by a strong wave. But, after watching for a while, it became clear that the seal was there because it wanted to be, and it was probably finding something to eat.

I like it here so much, I considered asking my hosts about staying on for another week or two. But, after some thought, I realized that I’m ready to move on to new sights and new experiences. A month is long enough and now it’s time for me to fly.

And I also realized that in all my time living in Yreka, I never went on a road trip to Bandon. So next week I will say a fond farewell to Waldport and when you hear from me again I will be in Bandon by the Sea. Stay tuned and thanks for stopping by.
