Sacred Places and Arrogant People

(6/14/2016) UPDATE: “Casey Nocket, 23, of San Diego was sentenced by U.S. Magistrate Judge Sheila Oberto in Fresno to 200 hours community service and two years probation. Oberto banned Nocket while she’s on probation from visiting lands managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.”

You can read the whole story here.

Having been fortunate enough to visit several national parks and monuments, as well as many state parks over the past few weeks, you must have known I would have an opinion about the young woman from upstate New York who recently went on a vandalism spree in national parks of the west. If you haven’t seen the story, this is the most recent update (From Modern Hiker). What troubles me most, is that she’s not the only person who feels entitled to deface nature. I’ve noticed more and more graffiti/vandalism in natural places in the last several years. The thing that makes this story so reprehensible, is the level of arrogance expressed by this woman who proudly posts her vandalism on Instagram and calls it art. I will not be mentioning her name in this article, nor will I be posting any photos of her vandalism, because my feeling is that she’s received quite enough attention already and I will not be adding to her ill-gotten fame. Instead, I will add some of my recent photos of places that haven’t (yet) been marred by graffiti.

The Reward

There are good reasons why what she has done is against the law, and I sincerely hope that those charged with enforcing the law will see to it that her selfish behavior carries an appropriate penalty. There seems to be an attitude, among some, that everything that exists is there for the taking. That if you pay an entrance fee, or even just make the effort to go somewhere, you can do whatever you want. Never mind the next person who will visit after you, just go on ahead and paint your mark on it. And it’s that attitude that is slowly destroying whatever is left on this planet that could be considered “natural.” The thing is, these parks belong to us all, not any one of us individually. Millions of people visit these places every year. If everyone had the attitude of this woman, there wouldn’t be a single bit of them without a mark on it.

I’ve read opinions of people who say “what’s the big deal?” “so she painted some rocks, so what?” The thing these people don’t understand is the spiritual connection with the natural world. It’s the incredible humility that comes from putting yourself in a position to realize just how insignificant you are in the vast universe. It’s impossible to explain and at the same time, I don’t need to explain it because if you’ve felt it, you know exactly what I’m talking about. For me, and many people I know, nature is our temple, our place of worship. I doubt this woman would walk into a cathedral and paint her graffiti on it, yet that’s exactly what she’s done in my eyes. I realize that I’m not going to change the opinion of anyone who thinks this kind of behavior is okay, but I feel compelled to express how offensive this is to me, and how important it is to actively discourage it with the imposition of negative consequences. Hasn’t the human race already marred the natural world enough? Shouldn’t places that have been set aside to remain as natural as possible be protected from those who would scrawl all over them?

I believe that nature’s beauty can absolutely inspire creativity. If the desire to make art comes to you as a result of visiting a natural wonder, that’s not a bad thing. But please make your art in a way that doesn’t tarnish the place that inspired it. Even if you don’t feel the reverence that I do for places like these, at least have some respect. “Take only pictures, leave only footprints.” It really is that simple.

The natural order of things

The natural order of things

I’ve been thinking lately about how we humans have distanced ourselves so much from the natural world, sometimes we forget we are a part of it. Not only is this disconnect bad for nature, I truly believe it’s not good for people either. I notice this sometimes when I post a photograph involving predator and prey. It’s fascinating to me when I see a bird of prey killing and/or eating another animal. I can’t help photographing it. I was even joking with someone the other day about the Canada goslings which have hatched recently in large numbers, calling them “eagle snacks.” It’s true that the bald eagle, which has not been seen around this lake for a couple of months, has recently been spotted again.

The person I was talking to was repulsed by my joke. I meant no harm, and I certainly don’t wish death on any of these cute little fuzzballs, but it is the natural balance that they won’t all make it to adulthood. There is only room in the world for a certain number of geese and nature tends to oversupply in order to assure a reasonable survival rate. I notice that many people find photographs of predators with prey repulsive. I think they are beautiful.

The Catch

There are drops of blood from the fish among the water splashes in this photo. I could probably edit them out and sanitize it more, but that would remove some of the beauty in my opinion. The more disconnected we become from the natural cycles, the less we embrace and accept them. To be repulsed by nature is to deny you are a part of it. For at least twenty years, my natural habitat was a cubicle. It wasn’t a healthy environment for me, and I can’t help but wonder how many others out there are feeling trapped inside while longing to be outside. Since I’ve started going out into nature nearly every day with my camera, I’m much happier and less stressed.

Don’t get me wrong–I love hot showers and I would hate to have to spear my dinner–but I think there is a balance needed between living in the civilized world and living in the natural world. Our ancestors had fears of cougars and hungry coyotes. We have fears of not making the mortgage payment and losing our possessions. Each person has a balance of their own to reach. I’m still working on finding mine, but I know nature photography has helped. I hope my photographs also might help others in some small way who are striving for their balance. Bringing a little nature into your day, no matter where you are, or what you happen to be doing, might move you closer to your balance.

Often, when I am out in nature, especially near the ocean or the giant redwoods, I feel very small. But, small in a good way. As if I’m but one tiny, intricate bit of a vast, amazing, integrated totality that’s always changing and evolving. My balance involves knowing that life is all too short and that whatever amazes me today may not be there tomorrow.

So, here’s to the joy of feeling small, and finding a balance.

The fine line between courage and insanity.

The fine line between courage and insanity.

Very often I feel brave for giving up a dull, but stable future in favor of a more rewarding, but uncertain one. Then, the “what-ifs” start swirling in my brain and I feel more crazy than brave. I suppose the truth is, I am little bit of both–brave and crazy. There are days when I’m so excited I can hardly wait to start my adventures, traveling around the country, leaving most of my material possessions behind, exploring new places, experiencing new things, and meeting new people.

There are other days when I’m filled with a sense of dread. What if I don’t like living on the road? What if I can’t afford it? What if I regret giving up my “things?” What if I’m just kidding myself about being a photographer?

shattered; shatter; glass; window; abandoned; abstract; shard; shards; metal; frame; sharp; sinister; multiple; many; layers; broken; smash; smashed; ruin; ruins; decay; dystopian; old; wreck; wrecked; Loree Johnson

Shattered

Quite often, I must remind myself that there are no guarantees in life. That staying in a safe situation can also mean stagnation and tedium. That taking a risk, even if I fail, is better than never knowing what could have been. Sometimes, when I tell someone my plans to downsize and go on the road, I see their eyes light up, and they tell me they’ve often dreamed of doing something similar. But they haven’t, and likely won’t, because it’s too scary. When that happens, I often feel very brave for a moment or two, and then I wonder if I’m insane.

Then I think about all the things I would never have seen if it weren’t for my wanderlust. And all the things I have yet to see. And I decide that maybe I am insane. But, no matter how this experiment turns out, it’s something I have to do, or I will forever regret not doing it. Hopefully, all of you reading this blog can come along and join me. Maybe live vicariously through my adventures, big and small. If it’s something you’ve always wanted to do, but weren’t quite crazy enough, maybe you can tell me how brave I am.

From salmonberry to trillium. The journey so far.

From salmonberry to trillium. The journey so far.

I realized recently that it’s been almost exactly five years since I decided to go down the photography road. In the spring of 2009, I was surfing the internet trying to decide how to spend my income tax refund. I had always wanted a good camera, and vowed to get one when my little Nikon Coolpix died. Problem was, it refused to die. Then I thought, why do I have to wait for my camera to break down before I can get a better one? That day, I ordered a Nikon D60 with a 28-55mm kit lens. My first DSLR. Little did I know at the time, that decision would change my life.

The day it arrived, I was so excited! As soon as the battery was charged, I was outside with it.  I had no idea how to do anything besides put the dial on “auto” and press the button. I just knew having a good camera was the key to good photos. At the end of the day, I uploaded my photos to the computer to see how much better they were going to be than the ones from my old camera. That day, I learned two things. One, it’s not the camera that makes great images, and two, I wanted to be a great photographer. Since that day, I have been relentless in my pursuit. I’m not even close to being a great photographer yet, but five years seems like a good milestone to reflect back from.

Over the next few months, after I got my hands on that first DSLR, I began to understand not only what it means to be a great photographer, but how much effort it takes. I had to learn what aperture means, what ISO is, and how they combine with shutter speed to produce exposure. I had to learn what focal length means, what depth of field is, and how to determine hyperfocal distance. I had to learn what metering is, how to do it, and the differences it makes. If doing this well meant I had to read my camera manual a dozen times, I was there. If it meant taking a class to learn how to use Photoshop, I was there. If it meant getting up before the sun to catch the light at a particular place, or missing dinner to catch the sunset at another place, or lugging a tripod with me on a five mile hike to get a shot of a waterfall, I was there. If it meant trying, and trying, and trying again before I finally got the result I wanted, I was there.

I thought it would be fun to share some of those early photos here, and compare them to more recent images. Here is a flower I shot back in 2009:

Salmonberry

I had no idea where the focal point was, I let the camera decide. Apparently, it decided the front of the leaf should be in focus, not the flower. Here is a more recent flower:

At that point, it’s easy to see that not only was focus eluding me, but exposure as well. Here is a recent beach sunset:

Over the past five years, I’ve upgraded the camera twice and acquired various lenses, filters, tripods, software, and other gear. I can say for sure that getting a new piece of kit doesn’t make me a better photographer. It generally gives me more options, or allows me to overcome certain limitations that I ran into. But, with each new thing, comes a whole new learning curve and new challenges. I spend more hours doing this than I ever spent doing a full-time job. Then again, photography is more to me than a hobby or a fun way to fill my leisure time. It’s my life, my purpose, my passion.

In 2010, I decided to give wildlife photography a try, since wildlife is so abundant in this area. However, my first attempts at it were so awful that I didn’t even keep any of the images. All I could find were some images from 2011:

Eagle in Flight

Eagle in Flight

It was mostly trial and error since I had read so much information on the internet, I didn’t know what to believe. The above eagle was shot at 1/800, f/5.3 and ISO 100. The one below was shot at 1/2000, f/7.1 and ISO 1000:

On the Wing

There was a time when I would look at work by great photographers and say to myself “I’ll never be able to do that.” Now I look at a great image and ask myself “what do I need to learn in order to be that good?” There was a time when I would see a great photograph, and set out to create one like it. Now I see a great photograph and set out to create a better one.

I could come up with many more examples of the progress I’ve made, but suffice to say, I’m getting there. Maybe someday I will be a great photographer. Or maybe I will die trying. Either way, I can’t imagine a better way to spend my life.

Always learning…

Always learning…

I posted a few months ago about how photography has taught me to see in ways I never did before. Lately I’ve been pondering all the other things I’ve learned as a result of photography. I’m not talking about f-stops, exposure, ISO and such, although I have learned and continue to learn more and more about all those things. What amazes me sometimes are the things I learn almost by accident because of my photography. For example, I learned how to tell the difference between a golden eagle and an immature bald eagle because they look similar and I wanted to know which bird I had photographed.

Golden Eagle Perched

In this image, you can clearly see the golden feathers on the back of the head and neck which are characteristic of golden eagles, no matter their age. In the image below, no such golden feathers are present, meaning it is a bald eagle which hasn’t matured enough to be “bald” yet.

I’ve learned the weather conditions which cause lenticular clouds to form because I want to be prepared to go out with my camera when these beautiful and photogenic clouds materialize around the local cloud generator–Mount Shasta.

I’ve learned the phases of the moon and the patterns of rise and set times for both the moon and the sun because then I can plan a photo shoot to either capture the moon

I’ve learned the terminology for different types of waterfalls. Not only so that I can describe them accurately, but also so that I know what to expect when making a trip to a waterfall I’ve not been to before. This is a plunge waterfall.

There are other types, too, as well as “combination” waterfalls that have characteristics of more than one type.

These are just a few of the many things I’ve learned because of my photography. As I continue to challenge myself and photograph new things in new ways, I’m excited about all the things I’m likely to learn along the way. My sincere hope is that for as long as I live, I will never stop learning.
