I know what you’re thinking. Why is she writing about her hair? No, that’s not it. I’ve been noticing that some photos really do look best in black and white. In fact, some of them virtually scream to be converted to monochrome. But even though it eventually dawns on me that an image should be desaturated, I remain resistant to it.

Why is that? I have great admiration for Ansel Adams’ work. In fact, I love black and white photography in general. I just have a very hard time ditching the color in my own photographs. I’m drawn to color and color is part of my style, I suppose.

And if I’m being honest, Galen Rowell’s work does appeal to me more than Ansel Adams’. Yet, even in my colorful world, there is a place for shades of gray.

So, if you hear one of my photographs screaming to be converted to grayscale and I’m not listening, please let me know. Thanks!
